Pregnancy guidance
AvoidRaw sprouted alfalfa seeds should be completely avoided during pregnancy. The warm and humid conditions required to sprout seeds create an ideal breeding ground for Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. CDC warns that pregnant women should never consume raw sprouts because washing seeds cannot eliminate internalized bacteria. If you crave crunchy toppings for sandwiches, use thoroughly washed shredded lettuce or crisp sliced cucumbers instead.
