Pregnancy guidance
Safe with precautionsRaw papaya is safe during pregnancy only when completely ripe with bright yellow or orange skin. Fully ripe papaya provides beneficial vitamin C, folate, and potassium, whereas unripe green papaya contains concentrated latex and papain that can stimulate uterine contractions. The NHS and ACOG advise pregnant women to strictly avoid unripe or semi-green papaya. Wash ripe papayas under running water before peeling and removing the black seeds.
